Un jeune homme armé, en apparence sans histoire, pénètre dans la salle de répétition d’une chorale et commet l’irréparable. Un geste tragique qui bouleverse toute une communauté, notamment la vie de Claire, la prêtre anglicane qui dirige cette chorale multiethnique. Épargnée en raison de la couleur de sa peau, elle peine à retrouver sa vie, obsédée par son besoin de comprendre, par sa rage et par un certain désir de vengeance. Comment un jeune en arrive-t-il à commettre un geste d’une telle brutalité ? Est-ce possible de lui pardonner ?

Dans cette œuvre, David Greig s’interroge sur le désespoir et la perte de repères qui poussent parfois certains de ces marginaux vers l’endoctrinement. Comment ces dérapages sont-ils possibles dans nos sociétés confortables ? Qu’est-ce qui pousse certains jeunes à se rallier à une pensée unique et radicale ? Loin des clichés et du sensationnalisme, la pièce nous plonge au cœur du grand débat sur la tolérance et notre ouverture à l’autre.

Après Yellow Moon et Midsummer, La Manufacture renoue avec l’écriture de David Greig. Denis Bernard, qui a entre autres réalisé la mise en scène de Coma Unplugged, Le Pillowman et Ce moment-là, dirige une équipe de deux acteurs et neuf chanteurs dans cette pièce traduite par Maryse Warda.

A young man enters the rehearsal room of a multi-ethnic choir. We kindly invite him to join his voice to the ensemble, but he has another idea in mind … Armed to the teeth, he fires at the assembled group, resulting in several deaths. Claire, an Anglican priest and survivor of the attack, is trying to understand what could motivate that person to carry out such an act. These questions lead her to scrutinize the very foundations of morality, reason, knowledge and even her own faith.

The author David Greig was inspired by the tragedy that occurred on Utøya Island in 2011. He wrote a unifying work, poignant, a footprint of great humanity. Of blackness welling light that enlightens us in our quest for resilience. It seeks to understand how a human being can sink into this absurd violence that drives some people to eliminate all those who do not think like them. A violence we encounter more and more each day.

After Yellow Moon and Midsummer, La Manufacture revives the writing of David Greig. Denis Bernard, who among other things staged Coma Unplugged, The Pillowman and Ce moment-là, directs a team of nine singers and two actors in this play translated by Maryse Warda.
