Un couple dans la trentaine attend patiemment dans la file d’un IKEA. Lorsqu’il avance l’idée d’avoir un enfant, elle semble prise au dépourvu. Ils repartent du magasin les mains vides, mais avec un paquet de questions. En ces temps d’austérité, d’incertitude politique et de changements climatiques, est-ce vraiment une bonne idée de mettre quelqu’un au monde? D’un autre côté, la race humaine se reproduit depuis 7500 générations sans trop se poser de questions… Que risquent-ils de détruire en premier, la planète ou leur relation de couple?

Dans ce texte drôle et attachant, Duncan Macmillan aborde la question de la responsabilité sociale et aussi celle d’une relation amoureuse entre deux personnes, imparfaites bien sûr, mais profondément humaines. Des arbres, c’est avant tout une histoire d’amour, avec ce tout ce qu’elle peut comporter de remises en question, d’engagement et d’abandon.

Créée en 2011 par la compagnie Paines Plough à Londres, Des arbres (Lungs) se méritait dès lors le prix de la meilleure nouvelle pièce aux « Off West End Awards » et aux « CBS Outstanding Drama Awards ». Dans cette pièce traduite par Benjamin Pradet, Sophie Cadieux et Maxime Denommée sont dirigés par Benoît Vermeulen, qui a mis en scène de nombreuses productions pour le Théâtre Le Clou, compagnie dont il est l’un des directeurs artistiques.

A couple in their thirties wait patiently in the line at IKEA. When he comes up with the idea of ​​having a child, the woman seems caught off guard. They leave the store empty-handed, but with a bunch of questions. In times of austerity, political uncertainty and climate change, is it really a good idea to bring a child into the world? On the other hand, the human race has been breeding since 7500 generations without asking too many questions … What do they risk destroying first, the planet or their relationship?

In this funny and engaging text, Duncan Macmillan addresses the issue of social responsibility and also that of a romantic relationship between two people, while at once imperfect but also deeply human. “Des arbres”(Lungs), is primarily a love story, with what all that can be challenged, commitment and abandonment.

Created in 2011 by the company Paines Plough in London “Des arbres” (Lungs) well deserves its award for best new play « Off West End Awards » and the « CBS Outstanding Drama Awards ».
